Maintenance Platforms for Electric Buses with Limited Space



Spika’s client needed a work platform to safely perform maintenance on their new electric buses. The platforms had to fit within a limited space, and they needed to be able to accommodate changes in the growing fleet.

Client Need:

Spika’s client is a public agency that provides local, regional, and express transit services to a region in Connecticut. They recently acquired two new electric buses for their fleet. While receiving training on the buses at the manufacturer’s facility, they used Spika work platforms. That experience led them to seek out Spika equipment to replace the lanyard system and ladders being used and more safely and efficiently accomplish their maintenance activities.


Spika worked directly with the client to develop a product that met their needs and worked in their limited space. Due to the complexities of the bus lift in their facility, original requests involved complex fixed structures and the need to store decks, but the Spika team was able to address those obstacles and develop a mobile solution.

Spika used their on-going expertise in electric bus roof access to develop an access system that addressed the client’s current needs and budget while planning for the future requirements by ensuring flexibility of the design, including height adjustability and modular configurability.

The platforms fit within the client’s space constraints and provided access at the heights required to freely work atop the bus roof without fall protection. The platforms were situated on both sides of the bus with adjoining cross-over railing to provide 360° fall protection while atop the bus roof. Manual jacks allowed adjustment to different height buses, different maintenance heights, and future height requirements. The system was modular and reconfigurable to allow for optimal use of the allotted space and the ability to change in the future.

Technical Information:

  • The platform system had to fit in a limited space.
  • The system needed to accommodate the variation in their expanding fleet, including multiple sizes of buses, different sizes of tires, variations in roof mounts, and more.
  • Access to the AC unit on top of the bus was priority, but a larger working area was desired to safely access more of the bus.
  • The system needed to eliminate the need for fall restraint and fall arrest systems.

What’s a Rich Text element?

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
